The answer
Kids choose when parents have no reason to choose again.
Parents choose again for three reasons. Those three recur across every case in this study, from supermarket cereal shelves in 1978 to configured carts in 2026. Their evidence bases are not equal, and section 04 grades each one rather than presenting them as equally certain.
Price
The amount is high enough that the parent stops executing and starts evaluating.
Judgment
The parent believes they know something the child does not, about nutrition, quality, safety, durability, or what is appropriate.
Standing
The parent gets something from making the choice themselves, because choosing is part of what they are giving.
Specification determines what the parent is being asked to buy. Friction determines how much work is left to say yes. Neither one governs whether the parent re-enters. That is what the three triggers do, and they operate independently of how precisely the child asked.
A fourth candidate that did not survive
When the specified item is out of stock or unavailable in the right size, the parent substitutes with no motive at all. That reaches the same outcome by a different route, so it belongs as a boundary condition rather than a fourth trigger. Worth flagging because it will confound any attempt to measure the three in live retail data. Inference
Kids were already influential
Children were choosing exact products, and parents were saying yes about half the time, before any of this was digital.

Children aged 3 to 12 requested an average of 14 products a month. Mothers most often agreed, and were more likely to agree for inexpensive items such as snack foods than for expensive ones such as bicycles and games. Sourced via the ACR summary of the Marketing Science Institute working paper, published in the Journal of Advertising Research in 1987. That last clause is the price trigger, established in 1979.

Methods differ across these studies. The timeline marks what each found, not a single measured series.
Roughly half of child requests converted, price already governed which half, and brand-specific requests were normal decades before digital commerce.
So what changed?
The influence share did not move. McNeal put children under 14 at as much as 47% of American household spending in 2005, more than $700 billion, reported via The Economist. Teneo's 2026 study of 1,000 children born 2010 to 2014 and their parents found Gen Alpha influencing nearly half of household spending decisions, around $255 billion in the US. Reported
What changed is where the parent is standing when the decision arrives.

Substitution moved from ambient to deliberate.
The parent can still substitute. What changed is what substitution costs. In a store, changing the child's choice required noticing an alternative already in front of you. Through a link or a cart, it requires deliberately leaving the child's selected object and doing part of the shopping yourself.
The child did not obviously gain more influence. The parent lost some of the automatic opportunities to reshape it.Inference
The shelf-visibility contrast is documented on the 1978 side and documented on the 2026 side. No study has measured substitution rates across the two environments, which is what would make this a finding rather than a reading.
One more thing changed: visibility. In PwC's 2026 survey of 1,004 children aged 7 to 14 and 1,009 parents, parent and child reports agree within three points on clothing influence, where the purchase happens in front of both of them. They diverge by 20 points on skincare and 11 points on independent food-delivery ordering. Fact The gap tracks how much of the purchase has left the parent's line of sight.
The parent re-enters
The three triggers are not equally well evidenced, and this artifact does not pretend otherwise.

Price
The best-evidenced trigger, and the only one with a direct household gradient. Isler, Popper and Ward found mothers yielding more readily to cheap requests than expensive ones. Reported Nothing since has contradicted it.
What a highly specific request does to a price-sensitive payer has no direct household measurement. The closest structural analogue is a prescription, where a specifier who is not the payer can block substitution outright.

5.6 million prescriptions from a national pharmacy benefits manager, January 2009. Around 5% carried a dispense-as-written designation, 2.7% from physicians and 2.0% from patients. Those prescriptions were more likely to be reversed, meaning the patient declined to buy at the counter. When a chronic medication was being started, dispense-as-written carried more than 50% greater odds that the prescription went unfilled. Fact
Funded by CVS Caremark, with three co-authors employed there. The finding runs against branded drugs.
What this establishes. When the specifier removes the payer's ability to substitute and the payer still faces the price, some payers exit entirely rather than comply.
What it does not establish. That households behave the same way. No study has tested it.
Specificity may help a child control the exact product below the parent's scrutiny threshold and hurt completion above it.Prediction

Judgment
Judgment looked like the weakest of the three until the grocery observations were read for what they refuse rather than what they yield.
In the Minneapolis study, sweets and snacks were 55.2% of child requests, and adults refused roughly half of all requests. A candy bar does not trip a price threshold. Something else is producing those refusals, and the study sits inside a nutrition-education literature that treats parental resistance to unhealthy requests as the phenomenon of interest.

The durability of parental judgment, measured backward
Anderson, Kellogg, Langer and Sallee matched 17,268 parent-child vehicle purchases in the Panel Study of Income Dynamics. A child whose parent recently bought a given brand was 39% more likely to choose that brand, a 5.6 point lift on a 14.3% base, holding county fixed effects and full demographics. The effect was stronger for cars owned while the child still lived at home. Fact
This measures preference transmission from parent to child over decades. It does not measure a parent overriding a child in the moment of a request, and it should not be read as if it did. Inference
Judgment is visible in the pattern. It is harder to quantify than price.
The birthday problem
The third trigger is the one nobody expects, and the only one with clean experimental evidence, none of it from households.

Five studies in a gift registry context. Givers emotionally close to the recipient diverge from the registry more often than distant givers, and the divergence appears only when the giver receives attribution for the choice. The authors rule out the altruistic reading directly: close givers are not searching for a better gift, they are producing a relational signal. Distant givers comply with the registry and end up selecting items that better match what the recipient wanted. Fact

That gives specification a structural way to fail even when price is acceptable, friction is near zero, and the exact product is known.

Nobody has tested relational signaling in parent-child purchases. Parents are the closest available givers under maximum attribution, which is why the prediction is worth making. The registry work covers friends and relatives, which is why it stays a prediction. And 61% of children aged 7 to 14 report adding items to birthday or holiday wish lists, so if the effect is real it operates exactly where specification is most used. Fact

Which one versus whether
Re-entry produces distinguishable outcomes, and collapsing them is how this literature goes wrong.

Exact match, substitution, rejection and completion move independently. A child can hold high influence and low exact-match. A child can hold high exact-match conditional on purchase while the purchase rate falls. The prescription case is the documented instance of that second combination.
The central missing measurement
No public figure exists for exact-match rate in households, in any era or category. Retailers with shared-cart and wish-list features hold this number. Nobody has published it. Unresolved

Allowance, gift cards, gaming balances, teen debit, prepaid wallets, platform currency.
Allocation moves the parent's decision upstream of the item. The parent retains budget, timing and sometimes category. The child holds the individual purchase, and item-level re-entry is gone because there is no item-level moment.
The mechanism is documented in platform terms. Roblox lets parents set monthly spending limits for children under 13, and the documentation states that those limits do not apply to gift card redemptions. Fact A supermarket gift card converts the child from petitioner to payer.
Prepaid money does not behave like the parent's money. Helion and Gilovich found across multiple studies, including an analysis of actual transactions at a campus bookstore, that people assign gift card value to a hedonic mental account and spend accordingly, skewing hedonic relative to credit card purchases at the same store. Raghubir and Srivastava found people spend more when funds arrive as a gift certificate than as equivalent cash. Both are adult samples. Reported Analogue
Delegation changes composition, not just who decides.
A parent handing over $50 in Robux has not made a smaller version of the same decision.
Strategic consequence. If Gen Alpha commerce moves toward allocation, the useful question stops being how to optimize the handoff and becomes how to be the product the child picks once the money is already theirs.
Trend direction is unresolved
In the PwC data, 60% of children say an adult pays. 49% use cash, 16% digital wallets, 14% gift cards, 12% a bank or debit card. Fact That is a snapshot, not a trajectory. Whether prepaid is gaining share on approval is unknown, and it is the difference between two opposite strategies. Unresolved

The catalog column is what kills the generational claim. Sears published a Christmas catalog from 1933 and named it the Wish Book in 1968, at 605 pages with 225 devoted to toys. JCPenney followed in 1963. Reported Children circled items so parents knew what to order. Specification at that level of detail is roughly sixty years old.
No transaction record exists showing whether a circled item was more likely to be bought than a spoken request, and none is likely to surface. That limits what catalogs can prove. It does not weaken what they disprove, which is that precise child specification began with digital commerce.
The story is not that children became more influential. The architecture around their influence changed.

Counterevidence

Every wish-list conversion figure in circulation traces to a company selling wish-list software. Two dedicated searches found no controlled test of shared carts, send-to-payer or pay-for-me flows in consumer commerce.

Closeness plus attribution produces divergence, and parents are the maximum case of both.
- Amazon built the handoff and walked away.
Teen order-approval ran for eight years and stopped accepting new signups on 7 April 2025, with no stated reason. Fact This is ambiguous and should never be cited as support in either direction.

If allocation is gaining share, the approval stage is a transitional feature of adolescence rather than a permanent structure.

During the Sephora Kids period, purchase concentrated in mass brands at Walmart, Amazon and Target, with only about one in three girls buying at Sephora. Reported The retailer that named the trend was not the one that closed it.

Kids choose when parents have no reason to choose again.
Parents choose again when it costs enough to care, when they think they know better, or when choosing is part of what they are giving.
Technical
A child's specification survives to checkout in inverse proportion to the parent's reason to re-enter the decision. Specification determines what the parent is asked to buy. Friction determines the cost of saying yes. Price, judgment and standing determine whether the parent re-enters at all. Allocation removes the question by moving the parent's decision upstream of the item.

On falsifiability
Triggers are identified after the fact in most of these cases, which means the rule can absorb almost any outcome by declaring which trigger fired. It becomes genuinely falsifiable only where the trigger is specified in advance. The wish-list test in section 07 does that: standing is predicted to be live inside gifting windows and quiet outside them, for the same households and the same items. If exact-match rates come back identical across those windows, the standing trigger fails.
What this predicts for Gen Alpha
Gen Alpha has not obviously gained more total household influence. What digital commerce added is the ability to carry more of a product decision intact to the payer, and to make the payer's substitution deliberate rather than ambient.
Children should hold more control over which one when three conditions hold at once: the price sits below the parent's scrutiny threshold, the parent does not think they know better, and the parent does not want credit for choosing.
When any condition fails, the parent re-enters through substitution, rejection or outright override, exactly as parents did at cereal shelves in 1978.
When the money has already been delegated, the parent may not re-enter at all. That is a different architecture with different economics, and it is already running in gaming.
